Vienna - Vienna's famous cultural heritage can now be accessed in detail via mouse-click. The Austrian capital Tuesday presented a new online cultural data bank providing information about history, artworks, archeology and about a third of the city's buildings.
The digital cadastral map - http://kulturgut.wien.at/ - gives access to information on 55,000 of Vienna's 160,000 buildings via current and historical maps.
The databank contains information on about 1,500 archeological sites within the city limits, as well as 700 historical monuments, however currently only those built before 1918.
The city's "cultural surveying" will be constantly enlarged and updated, Andreas Mailath-Pokorny, city councillor for culture said at the databank's presentation on Tuesday.
Information on fountains, memorial plates, free-standing statues or small religious monuments is included in the easily accessible documentation, as is substantive data on the city's architecture.
Sub-categories also allow searches for archeological information or museums and art collections across the city.
Documentation on individual buildings contains information on building types, historical period of construction, world cultural heritage status, protected building zones, historical data and an index of other listings of the respective building. If available, photos can be accessed as well.
The search for an individual building can be conducted via a digital map - with Vienna's St. Stephen's cathedral as starting point - or by typing in an address.
"I have found all the houses I used to live in," Mailath-Pokorny said, happy about the databank's information depth.
