Stockholm - Telecommunications group Telia Sonera said Monday it would pay 60 million kronor (9.4 million dollars) in compensation to customers who lost email messages because of a server crash. The fault impacted Telia Sonera clients in Sweden. Since the backup system also failed some 1.8 million email messages, the oldest dating back to December 15, were lost, the group said.
The fault impacted 300,000 email accounts, and each impacted customer was to receive a gift certificate worth 200 kronor as compensation.
Telia Sonera spokesman Ola Kallemur said the incident was "extremely serious" and the group has appointed a review group to probe it.
Northern Europe's largest telecommunications concern was formed through the December 2002 merger of Sweden's Telia and Finland's Sonera.
