Doctors say that a powerful new method of In Vitro Fertilization can "beat nature" and is already a huge success. The method called invitro maturation (IVM), has already helped over a 1,000 women become pregnant, the doctors claimed.
With IVF there is a need to take expensive fertility drugs. However this new method does not require any such interventions. The IVM method takes undeveloped or immature eggs from the ovaries and matures them in the laboratory without making use of any drugs.
Professor Svend Lindenberg, a Danish scientist involved with the research, said that it had proved to be a stunning success. “We have demonstrated that it is possible to take an egg and fertilize it without having to use the heavy-duty drug approach,” he said.
“We are achieving results that are better than nature and as good as high-stimulation IVF, without the risk of potentially life-threatening ovarian hyperstimulation and, of course, saving thousands of pounds per cycle in the cost of drugs," he added.
In modern times, infertility has become a curse to couples. In desperation they undergo many cycles of IVF, which more often than not is disastrous and a chancy method. Moreover the costs involved are huge, making it outside the reach of many couples.
However IVM promises to remove the hurdles presented by IVF. “This is part of a worldwide move against high-dose stimulation IVF,” Professor Lindenberg said.
The details of the research were presented earlier this month at the International Society of Natural Cycle Assisted Reproduction.
