Colombo - An opposition Tamil member of parliament was shot and critically wounded inside a Hindu temple in Sri Lanka's capital, police said Tuesday. The MP T Maheshwaran was attending a new year religious ceremony at the Hindu temple in Kotahena within the Colombo city on Tuesday morning when he was shot by an unidentified person.
Two other people were injured in the attack.
The lawmaker represents the main opposition United National Party (UNP) and has regularly voiced his concerns about issues of minority Tamils including the recent arrest of Tamil civilians in the capital by police.
The civilians were arrested on the grounds they were linked to the Tamil rebels, but following a court order most of them were released.
