New York - United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon Monday urged all sides in Kenya to remain calm and resolve their differences peacefully after more than 100 people were killed in post-election violence in the east African country. Ban "urges the security forces to show utmost restraint. The Secretary General appeals to the population for calm, patience and respect for law," according to a statement released by the UN in New York.
"The Secretary General calls on the political parties and leaders to resolve their differences peacefully through dialogue and by making full use of the existing legal mechanisms and procedures," the statement said.
Rioting broke out across Kenya on Sunday after incumbent Mwai Kibaki was officially declared the winner of last week's presidential election by a wafer-thin margin.
The Red Cross said more than 100 people have been killed as supporters of opposition candidate Raila Odinga took to the streets and clashed with police.
