Deep Sengupta among leaders in Hastings chess

Hastings, Dec 31 - Deep Sengupta was in the group of 13 joint leaders at the end of the third round of the Hastings International Masters Chess Congress 2007-08 tournament in Britain. Sengupta (2,476) drew his game against Daniel Gormally to take his tally to 2.5 points Sunday.

Sengupta (2,447) was rated way below Gormally (2,484), but the Indian held his own and split the point.

The other two Indians in the fray, Saptarishi Roy Chowdhury and S. Satyapragyan, lost their third round games and have 1.5 points each from three rounds.

Saptarishi playing with black lost to Vladimir Georgiev of Macedonia, while Satyapragyan, also black, lost to Valeriy Neverov of Ukraine.

Earlier in the second round, the Indians had a great outing with Deep Sengupta beating fifth seed Nidjat Mamedov of Azerbaijan and Saptarishi Roy Chowdhury holding fancied Stuart Conquest of England and S. Satyapragyan also playing a draw with Pert Nicholas, also from England.

In the fourth round, Deep Sengupta is pitted against Farhad Tahirov of Azerbaijan. The Indian will have black pieces.
