LOS ANGELES - Apple and News Corp. have agreed to a new deal that will see movies from Twentieth Century Fox being rented through the former's flagship iTunes Music Store, according to media reports. The Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal confirmed these reports in their online editions.
the Financial Times cited an unnamed source as saying that users will be able to rent the latest movies from Fox by downloading a copy from iTunes. However this would only be effective for a limited time. The iTunes Music store already sells movies from studios like Walt Disney Co and Paramount Pictures.
The latter though only offers older releases, while the former offers new ones as well. Under the terms of agreement, Fox will use Apple's FairPlay digital rights management technology in all its future releases, the Times reported. Apple is also trying to get Sony and Paramount to use the FairPlay technology.
The Financial Times added that the deal would probably be announced at the Macworld Conference on January 14.
