MILWAUKEE, Dec. 27 Karl Strauss, the former master brewer of Pabst Brewing Co. and owner of his own brewing company, has died in Milwaukee at the age of 94.

Strauss, who spent 44 years with Pabst before retiring to start the Karl Strauss Brewing Co. in San Diego, died in his home of unreported causes, The Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.

He was a proponent of smaller brewers, craft brewers from their very inception, Raymond Klimovitz, a Wisconsin beer consultant and executive council member of the Master Brewers Association of the Americas, told the newspaper. Strauss was born in Minden, Germany, in 1912. He followed in his father's footsteps and earned his master brewer's certificate at a Munich technical institute, the Times said. Strauss fled the country with his family when Adolf Hitler came to power.

The brewer is survived by his wife, Marjean Strauss, and four stepchildren. He is scheduled for burial Friday in Los Angeles.
