CINCINNATI, Dec. 17 The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants the city of Cincinnati to ban the display of wild animals.
Councilwoman Roxanne Qualls asked City Manager Milton Dohoney for a report to council after receiving the letter from PETA, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported Monday.
The request was partly inspired by the situation of Lakota, a 720-pound bear displayed at the Hamilton County Fair in August. The bear entered a pizza-eating contest against fair-goers as part of a show by World Animal Studios.
Fair officials said Lakota, another bear cub, four tigers and two wolves, were a popular attraction for the fair, but were let go after it emerged that their trainer was not licensed to show the animals.
But some people complained about the animals being in the heat, which topped 90 degrees, and about Lakota being forced to compete against humans.
The letter requesting the ordinance was written by Daniel Hauff, PETA's animals in entertainment specialist.
