NEW YORK, Dec. 16 Singer-songwriter Dan Fogelberg died Sunday in Maine of cancer at age 56.

Fogelberg's death, at 6 a.m., was announced in a posting on his Web site.

"He fought a brave battle with cancer and died peacefully at home in Maine with his wife Jean at his side," the posting said.

Fogelberg's hits included Longer" and "Leader of the Band."

Fogelberg, a native of Peoria, Ill., was diagnosed in 2004 with advanced prostate cancer. In 2005, he told an interviewer his cancer was at "an almost negligible level."

He also posted a message on his Web site thanking "the thousands of wonderful people who have sent such incredibly moving and supportive e-mails via the Living Legacy Web site."

"It is truly overwhelming and humbling to realize how many lives my music has touched so deeply all these years," he said.

Fogelberg urged other men to get tested annually for prostate cancer.

"The medical community suggests this for men over 50, but men with a family history of prostate cancer should start getting tested at age 40," he said.
