TROY, Ohio, Dec. 14 An Ohio jail is being painted pink to test the local sheriff's theory that the color is soothing.

Miami County Sheriff Charles Cox told the Dayton Daily News that the idea "basically came off the top of my head." He suggested the color change to Dee Sandy, administrator at the jail, who at first thought he was joking.

Sandy is now supervising the repainting with walls getting coats of pink paint and bars purple. Getting the right shade for the bars took some doing, with the initial choice, a dark Barney the Dinosaur shade, being rejected for a lighter thistle shade, the report said.

"It actually is really pretty," Sandy said.

The inmates are doing the painting.

Cox said he does not intend the color change as an insult to inmates. Instead, he hopes that they will be calmed by living in a more attractive jail.
