Hanoi - Five people, including a child, were killed and more than 10 others injured when a bus crashed into a container truck in northern Vietnam, police said Friday. The accident happened at lunchtime Thursday in Quang Ninh province, 150 kilometers east of Hanoi, said Do The Khuynh, director of the province's traffic police department.

"The 24-seat bus was en route from Ha Long City to Cam Pha town," Khuynh said. "It struck the rear of a container truck parked on the roadside."

Khuynh said the five victims included a mother and her child.

Police arrested the driver of the bus, Vu Van Nam, 32, who suffered minor injuries in the crash.

"The accident happened due to driver's failure to pay attention," Khuynh said.

Traffic accidents have killed more than 11,000 people in Vietnam in the first 11 months of this year. More than 75 per cent of the accidents were caused by motorbikes, while 17 per cent were caused by cars, according to government statistics.
