Singapore - Two businessmen were jailed and fined for bankrolling an illegal casino in the Senegal consulate in Singapore last year, news reports said on Friday. Tan Kim Sing, 61, was sentenced by a Singapore district court judge on Thursday to four weeks behind bars. Ang Poon Beng, 49, was sentenced to six weeks.
Each was also fined 40,000 Singapore dollars (27,000 US dollars).
The casino attracted high rollers, with stakes for baccarat ranging from 300 Singapore dollars (209 US dollars) to 30,000 Singapore dollars (21,000 US dollars), The Straits Times said.
Tan and Ang pleaded guilty to helping manage a common gaming house from September to early November last year.
Tan made sure the business was running smoothly, while Ang hired Indonesian to work the tables, the court heard.
Officers raided the consulate and seized gambling paraphernalia and 106,536 Singapore dollars (75,000 US dollars) in cash.
Lawyer Jimmy Yim told Judge Wong Keen Onn his clients thought they were joining a private club where gaming was allowed.
