SAN CARLOS, Calif., Dec. 12 A disoriented sea lion that found its way onto a street in San Carlos, Calif., is safe and apparently unharmed after being rescued by local animal experts.
Police Cmdr. Rich Cinfio said officers found the confused animal blocking traffic on a road after receiving several calls from concerned citizens, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Wednesday.
Cinfio said the sea lion appeared to have crawled into the street from a nearby creek and then gotten confused by its frightening new surroundings.
"Of course, it was frightened and wanted to get away, but it was getting away in the wrong direction," Cinfio said. "It's near railway tracks and everything else."
Officials from the nearby Marine Mammal Center were called in to help the ailing animal and they transported it in a large bucket to an animal hospital.
The Chronicle said the sea lion will eventually be released back into the wild.
