Mumbai, Dec 10 - Kerala filmmaker P. Vinayan's 2005 blockbuster 'Albhutha Dweep' (Wonder Island) has earned not only a Guinness Book entry but also enriched the lives of many of its physically disadvantaged actors.

The 350 actors in the movie, including the male lead Ajayan, are all dwarfs - ranging between 2.5 ft and 3.5 ft in height, Vinayan told IANS over phone from Thiruvananthapuram.

'God gave them a handicap, I tried to give them confidence in life. My humble efforts have borne some results,' Vinayan said.

Vinayan said he first got the idea of making the movie when he worked as an engineer with the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB). At the time, he even enacted a prominent role in a Malayalam movie, 'Meenamasathile Surivan' (1985).

'In my office, we had a colleague who was a dwarf, his wife was also short in stature. I was always amazed at how the couple lived their lives, happy and contented, always going out of the way to be kind and helpful to others. The first outline of my future movie was etched from the real-life role of my colleague and his family,' Vinayan remarked.

He chucked acting and followed his heart's calling - direction. He got a break as a director for 'Superstar', which became a super-hit. Vinayan had arrived in the southern Indian film industry with a bang.

Then came movies like 'Vaasanthiym, Lakshmiyum Pinne Niyum', 'Karumadikuttan', and 'Ooma Pennudu Uriyadappavana'. The common thread running through most of his movies is the highlighting of some form of physical, mental, psychological handicap, and most of the movies are scripted by Vinayan himself.

'Many people who are blessed with a short stature, or dwarfs, are looked down upon by society. They have to suffer and struggle a lot in life. Even if they are capable in all respects, they are not considered for many things that normal people would take for granted,' Vinayan explained.

The Kochi Municipal Corporation had scheduled a civic reception for Vinayan and Ajayan for their record feat Monday. The Guinness World Records book for 2008 with the entry for 'Albhuta Dweep' was released a couple of days ago.

The film managed to practically change Kerala society's perceptions towards dwarfs. With considerable efforts, Vinayan got a record 350 dwarfs from Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu for the movie.

The movie was shot on a small river island in Palakkad and some scenes were shot in Lakshadweep and Minicoy Islands. Since some of them had medical problems, a four-member team of doctors was permanently stationed on the sets to handle emergencies.

In the past two years since the release and roaring success of the movie, 28 eligible dwarfs, including Ajayan, have been happily married to normal, tall girls! Vinayan was present at each of these weddings held in different parts of south India to bless the couples.

Maybe it seems like you are exploiting these people due to their short stature.I am short but i like to try to be treated the same has everyone else.I am 32 years old and only 4'9 when i go out i have to always try to wear shoes with abit of a heel on them.Otherwise i cant have a proper conversation with them.Unless they sit down.At work there are guys that are over 6'0 the tallest is 6'7 and if we chat i always ask him to sit down as he is nearly 2 feet taller than me.I am somewhere near his chest when he comes up to me.I wouldnt call myself handicapped by being short and yes i am probably with the height of being a dwarf.I dont get labelled a dwarf only when i was younger and at school some of the kids used to call me a midget and i would get upset.I just say god made me this way so i accept it.I mean both my parents are 5'5 and 5'2 so i didnt expect to be tall.I have a sister who is 30 and she is 5'0 followed by our brother who is 26 and he is 4'11.So i must say that i am happiest with my family has no one is extremely tall.I do have a nan who is 92 now and still quite healthy but i used to believe she was average height.Apparently she used to be 5'0 and now over the years she is down to my height so over the years she has lost 3 ins.So if i end up the same i could lose 3 ins as well thus taking me down to 4'6.I truly hope not though.I also have some cousins that are similar no one in our immediate family is over 5'6.I do however have a nephew who is adorable she is 15 now and she is only 4'6.I usually try to help her when she gets upset at school has all her friends are taller than her and she sometimes hangs with kids younger than her.Has some games are too boisterous for her.

I live in England now after moving from New Dehli. My mum is 4'5 followed by my dad who is 4'3.Me i am 4'0 and my sister is jassair she is 3'9.Where we live in Newcastle we get a lot of trouble from people in the area calling us names and tormenting us.I am now 49 yrs old and my sister is 46 yrs old.We have lived here since i was 6 yrs old.The school just wasnt any good for us to adapt to we were classed has being dwarfs which i always regretted the word has it was new to us when we came.I had to help Jassair cope with school has there just wasnt anyone our height.I and dad also had the disrespect of the majority of people for being shorter than my mum.Sometimes i regret coming here has in out town where we lived everyone accepted us for what we were.Later on we had more asian families moving near to us and they werent too bad fully accepting us.Even to this day i have worked really hard to prove myself.I just cant find a woman to accept mehas i am so i feel that the only thing available is to return home to my country where i may be lucky.Jassair is also not happy and may do so has well.We feel that in India things are more adaptable than here in England.
