Sion Bebb Thursday shot 5-under-par 67 to grab the lead after one round of the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Mpumalanga, South Africa.
The event is the fifth tournament on the European Tour's 2008 schedule.
Starting his round on the back nine, the Welshman set a tone for other players by recording an ace and three birdies early.
"If I can shoot 67, then I'm sure others can too," Bebb said. "But it is very difficult out there, the toughest I have seen it in my three visits here what with that wind. It's swirling all around and I was hitting clubs too long and too short. Fortunately, I was able to make some putts."
England's Craig Lee and South Africa's Omar Sandys share second place after their 4-under 68s and South Africans George Coetzee and Thabang Simon are joined in fourth place with England's Richard Bland at 3-under 69.
