Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain - Fourteen African would-be immigrants have died over three days in attempts to cross over to Spain, media reported Wednesday. Two boats carrying about 90 migrants and three bodies arrived overnight on Tenerife. Some of the survivors were given medical care, but their lives were not in danger.

Rescuers meanwhile gave up the search for nine migrants who were believed to have drowned after their boat capsized off Cabo de Palos on the south-eastern coast.

A Dutch cargo ship had on Monday rescued two Algerian survivors and a body. They were handed over to an Algerian patrol boat and taken to Algeria.

Another boat carrying 57 migrants and a body had arrived on Tenerife on Monday, bringing the total death toll to 14.
