Hanoi - A Hungarian man has died while hang gliding off a mountain in southern Vietnam, Vietnamese police said Monday. The 35-year-old man was hang gliding Sunday off of Lang Bian Mountain near the city of Dalat, a popular tourist destination 350 kilometers northeast of Ho Chi Minh City, when he lost control and plunged into the rocky mountainside, according to district police chief Do Van Tuong.
"Witnesses said he had been gliding for more than 30 minutes before he was blown down by strong winds and crashed," Tuong said.
Police said the victim, a construction engineer working in Vietnam who had married a Vietnamese woman three months ago, died immediately from multiple injuries.
Eight other people, including six Vietnamese and two foreigners, had also been hang gliding on Lang Bian Mountain on Sunday, according to the Vietnamese newspaper Dan Tri. The paper said the mountain is a favourite of gliding enthusiasts.
"Many foreigners have been hang gliding on this beautiful mountain every weekend for years, but this is the first accident of this kind," Tuong said.
