Tehran - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday termed the Middle East peace conference in Annapolis as "unimportant and just US propaganda for Zionists (Israel)."Mehr news agency quoted Ahmadinejad as saying that the United States had gathered a number of Arab states in order to strengthen the status of Israel in the Middle East.
"But the US should allow the Arab people (not leaders) to express their standpoints to reflect the real sentiments on the Zionist (Israeli) regime," Ahmadinejad said.
"Very soon even the most stupid people will realise that the Annapolis conference was right from the beginning doomed to fail," he added, without clarifying to whom he was referring.
Once again predicting the imminent collapse of Israel, the president said the Annapolis initiative would like previous peace plans and conferences bring no results for the Middle East crisis.
Government newspaper Iran on Wednesday quoted Culture Minister Safar Harandi as calling the final declaration of the Annapolis conference a "piece of useless torn paper."
Since the 1979 Islamic revolution, Iran does not recognize Israel as a sovereign state and has constantly adopted an antagonistic approach towards the Middle East peace process.
Iran says only a referendum of all Palestinians, including the millions of refugees, should clarify the future status of what Tehran calls "occupied Palestine."
Iran's ultimate wish is however the formation of a sovereign Palestinian state, with Jerusalem as its capital, in which Jews could also live alongside Palestinians.
