Being (dis)honored by People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) on their Worst Dressed Celebrity of 2006 list for wearing fur has made actress Christina Ricci see the errors of her way.

The fact that fans were also not so enthusiastic about seeing their favorite celebrity don dead animals' coats prompted the actress to send an apology email to the animal rights organization.

“I never meant to hurt nor anger anyone with my insensitivity. For what it is worth I have received the message loud and clear and will not be wearing fur in the future. I apologize for my offensive actions,” the actress wrote in the email. Ricci was placed third on the list, which was topped by Nicole Richie and Ashley Olsen.

“Disregarding the holiday season's 'Peace on Earth' message, Ricci recently posed for the cover of a magazine wearing fur from a slaughtered reindeer. We know one person who definitely won't be on Santa's 'nice' list this year,” PETA wrote about Ricci while announcing the 'winners'.

The magazine in question was W on the cover of which Ricci sported reindeer fur. PETA's list prompted many fans to inundate the 26-year-old actress with hate mail. Such was the outrage that Christinaricci.info, a popular fan site dedicated to the actress was shut down by the owner due to her 'fur usage'.

“I recently found out Christina doesn't appear to have a problem wearing fur. Well, I do. I also have a problem with people who wear fur. Conclusion: I have a problem with Christina… I no longer have anything to do with her,” the owner, who has signed his name as Dodger, wrote on the seven-year-old site.

Fans' anger was not lost on Ricci. “After being named on the PETA worst dressed list for wearing fur on the cover of W magazine, I have been deluged with angry and disappointed fans,” Ricci wrote in the email to PETA.

A child actress who made her Hollywood debut in Mermaids, Ricci went on to act in several other films including The Addams Family and Little Red Riding Hood.

After The Ice Storm, she appeared in grown-up roles in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Monster, Sleepy Hollow and more recently Cursed, among many others. Ricci will be seen next in Penelope alongside Reese Witherspoon.

Fur is Cruel
By: William McMullin , Sat, 23 Dec 2006 03:43:30 GMT

Animals skinned for fur come from two places—fur ranches and trapping the animals in the wild. On fur ranches, animals lead miserable lives confined in small, filthy cages. They are cruelly killed by being gassed, suffocated, or by electrocution. They are electrocuted anally or through the mouth so that the blood doesn’t ruin the “clothes.”

Trapping animals in the wild for fur is not any more humane. There are many traps used to trap animals. One common trap is the steel-jaw leghold trap. This trap closes with bone-crushing force onto an animal. The animals often try to chew their own limbs off to escape. The traps also catch our companion animals such as dogs and cats. These traps are dangerous to children.

THANK YOU CHRISTINA!

I thank christina ricci for her compassionate decision! Fur from animals who have been cruelly bludgeoned, stomped on, anally electrocuted, and even skinned alive should NOT be in fashion. Fur is so cruel, it should be a downright felony to own it.

Thank you Christina Ricci! Now if only J.Lo and Beyonce would become compassionate towards animals. I wouldn't count on it though.
