MIAMI, Nov. 26 Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor was shot and wounded by an intruder early Monday in his home in Miami, police said.

Taylor, the fifth player taken overall in the 2004 draft, reportedly was shot in the upper leg area and lost a large amount of blood, CNN reported.

"The Washington Redskins became aware of a situation this morning in which safety Sean Taylor was the victim of a shooting at his residence in Florida," the Redskins said in a statement. "Taylor is currently undergoing treatment at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Florida."

A hospital spokeswoman said Taylor's family has asked information about his condition not be released, the Miami Herald reported.

Details about the shooting were sketchy. Miami-Dade patrol officers said they received a call about 1:45 a.m. EST that a homeowner had been shot in the leg after investigating the sound of someone trying to pry open a door to the residence, the Herald reported.

Taylor, 24, is in his fourth season with the Redskins. A safety with a standout career at the University of Miami, he leads the team with five interceptions but missed the last two games with a knee injury.
