MAYVILLE, Wis., Nov. 21 A 13-year-old Mayville, Wis., boy had a close shave but avoided injury when his hat was shot off his head while he was hunting on public lands.

The boy's father, Jeffrey Trepanier, told the Dodge County Sheriff's Department Monday he was hunting with his son on public lands near Highways 28 and 175 north of Theresa, Wis., when the boy's hat was shot off by a bullet of unknown origin, The Fond Du Lac (Wis.) Reporter reported Wednesday.

"That was way too close for comfort," said Deputy Chief Blaine Lauersdorf of the Sheriff's Department. "We searched the area and were unable to determine where the shot came from."

Lauersdorf said it is imperative that hunters ensure they know exactly what they are shooting at before pulling the trigger.

"When you are hunting on public lands you have no control over who is hunting out there with you like you do on private property, so it's important to familiarize yourself with your surroundings," he said.
