LOS ANGELES, Nov. 21 U.S. singer Neil Diamond revealed that Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg was the inspiration for his classic 1969 song "Sweet Caroline."

Diamond disclosed the identity of his secret muse when he performed via satellite at a 50th birthday party for Schlossberg, the daughter of late U.S. President John F. Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy Onassis, the Daily Telegraph reported. She turns 50 on Tuesday.

"I have never discussed it with anybody before -- intentionally," the singer-songwriter said.

"I thought maybe I would tell it to Caroline when I met her some day."

Diamond said Schlossberg was thrilled when he explained how he had been a "young, broke songwriter" when he was inspired by her photograph in a magazine.

"It was a picture of a little girl dressed to the nines in her riding gear, next to her pony," he said. "It was such an innocent, wonderful picture, I immediately felt there was a song in there."
