Tokyo stocks open lower on US subprime home-loan worries

Tokyo - Tokyo stocks opened lower Wednesday as US subprime mortgage woes kept investors away from buying shares. The Nikkei 225 Stock Average declined 196.09 points in morning trading, or 1.29 per cent, to 15,015.43.

The broader Topix index of all first-section issues was also down 13.95 points, or 0.95 per cent, to 1,455.32.

On currency markets at 9 am (0000 GMT), the dollar was quoted at 109.70-75 yen, down from Tuesday's 5 pm quote of 110.40-43 yen.

The euro was quoted at 1.4830-35 dollars, up from Tuesday's 5 pm quote of 1.4733-36 dollars, and at 162.73-78 yen, up from 162.68-72 yen.
