LAS VEGAS, Nov. 17 A new report finds that Las Vegas is as likely a target for terrorists as most large U.S. cities.
The Rand Corp. listed the gambling haven ninth. Only New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles and San Francisco were significantly more likely to be attacked, the report said, while Boston, Houston, Philadelphia and Miami were about as much at risk.
"Las Vegas stands out in having a high proportion of high-likelihood targets compared to the nation as a whole," the report said. "This unusual distribution increases the overall attack probability in Las Vegas."
Henry Willis, the main author, said the Department of Homeland Security asked Rand to use Las Vegas as a case study. He said the cluster of large casino resorts in the city -- and the financial loss and property damage possible in an attack on one of them -- puts the city at risk.
