Maranello, Italy - The Ferrari Formula One team announced Monday that Jean Todt will be replaced as team boss by current sporting director Stefano Domenicali from January. The announcment comes on the same day as the news former Ferrari technical director Ross Brawn is to become the new team principal at Honda.
Todt will stay on in a senior executive position.
Although Todt has been with the Italian marque since 1993, the team only truly began to flourish with the arrival of Michael Schumacher, Brawn and designer Rory Byrne from Benetton in 1996.
Brawn took over as technical director while Byrne became chief designer. A first constructors' title in 16 years followed in 1999 as Ferrari entered a period of total domination of F1.
Five more constructors' titles followed between 2000 and 20004, during which time Schumacher also collected five drivers' crowns to add to the two he had previously secured at Benetton in 1995 and 1996.
Todt's move upstairs, coupled with Brawn's decision to move to Honda following his one-year sabbatical from the sport and Byrne's departure a year ago to be replaced by Aldo Costa means a totally new team is at the Ferrari helm.
Ferrari clinched the 2007 constructors' title while Finland's Kimi Raikkonen, who replaced the retiring Schumacher at the end of 2006, won the world title.
