Amman - Jordan's King Abdullah II and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas flew to Cairo from Amman on Sunday for a short visit to Egypt, the royal court announced. The two leaders are expected to have talks on the latest peace moves with Egyptian President Hosny Mubarak and other Arab leaders who converged on Cairo to attend the opening of the 11th Arab Sports Tournament.
Before their departure to Cairo, the Jordanian and Palestinian leaders held talks at Queen Alia International Airport that tackled "ongoing efforts aimed at working out an agenda for the Mideast peace conference scheduled to be held at Annapolis, Maryland before the end of the year," the statement said.
"King Abdullah underlined the importance of the Palestinian and Israeli sides taking all steps necessary to ensure the meeting is a success," it added.
King Abdullah reiterated the need to include the core issues of Jerusalem, refugees, settlements and borders on the agenda of the US- sponsored conference.
