EDINBURGH, Scotland, Dec. 13 One of Scotland's major arts patrons has given a big helping hand to the Edinburgh International Festival in the form of a major grant. The award of 500,000 pounds ($983,000) from the Dunard Fund will be used to pay off debts for the classical music festival. The Dunard Fund is run by Carol Colburn Hogel, the Chicago-raised heiress to her dad's electric-company fortune, and a former pianist who once played the festival. The Scotsman said Wednesday Hogel has become a dependable benefactor of Scotland's fine arts. She told the newspaper she would be playing a private concert this week of the same Strauss and Beethoven works she performed at the Edinburgh festival 30 years ago.Copyright 2006 by UPI
