Tokyo - Volkswagen presented a station wagon version of its super small car, the Up! at the Tokyo Motor Show, only weeks after the concept car first was unveiled at the Frankfurt show (IAA)Called the Space Up! the four-door station wagon measures just 3.68 metres in length and is 1.63 metres in width, 23 cm longer and four cm taller than the Up! shown in Frankfurt.
Like the Up! shown in Frankfurt the Space Up! is fitted with a rear engine with a choice of either petrol, diesel or electric drive.
The load volume is between 220 and 1,005 litres depending on how the seats are folded. The rear seats can be converted into child seats. Two rear doors give access to the loading area while the side doors open to either side
"The world premiere of the Up! at the IAA in Frankfurt served as an initial test to see how the concept of our new small family would be received in Europe. And the results of this test were more than favourable," said Ulrich Hackenberg, head of VW's technical development.
German press reports said that Volkswagen was planning sales of the Up! from 2010. However, it remains still unclear where the car will be produced.
