TOPEKA, Kan., Nov. 5 Professional bullrider Cody Bruner has died after sustaining serious injuries during a dismount from a successful ride in Kansas.
Bruner, 21, died at Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center Saturday, the final night of the United Rodeo Association Finals in the R.R. Domer Livestock Arena at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka, The Topeka Capital-Journal reported Monday.
The rider had stayed on the bull for a full eight seconds -- enough for a successful ride -- but was injured while getting off.
"It was a tragic accident," said Clint Tatum, incoming president of the URA. "We are a tight-knit family. We are all suffering from a loss."
Tatum said the death was the first at an URA event since the association was established in 1962. He said more information about Bruner would be made available later.
"All this is just soaking in," he said.
