San Francisco - A magnitude-5.6 earthquake sent a large shudder through the San Francisco Bay region Tuesday night, but there were no initial reports of major injuries. The quake's epicentre was 15 kilometers north-east of San Jose, according to the US Geological Survey. Residents reported the tremor lasted more than 15 seconds.
The earthquake came as state emergency services are stretched thin dealing with the wildfires in Southern California.
Like much of the state, the San Francisco region sits above major fault lines. It experienced its last serious earthquake in 1989 with the magnitude-6.9 Loma Prieta quake, which killed 62 people.
