Software giant Microsoft Corp has apologized to users for an issue with Windows Server update that bypassed controls and automatically installed Windows Desktop Search on users' computers even if they had not approved the same.
The problem meant that organizations that had availed the February update of Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) package got Windows Desktop Search tool on all outlets whether they wanted it or not.
Bobbie Harder, programme manager for WSUS explained the error in post on Microsoft's official WSUS blog. "We sincerely regret the inconvenience this has caused and extend a sincere apology to all impacted customers," he wrote. "We will make a new package available for WSUS in the near future, but not as an update revision, so that you can rely on predictable update behavior with auto-approval settings."
Redmond said it was working on the issue and had currently stopped distributing the WDS tool through WSUS. By using Windows' Add Or Remove Programs, users will be able to install/uninstall the WSUS update.
