Baghdad - Investigators in the Iraqi province of Diwanya have issued warrants for the arrest of 50 policemen on suspicion of involvement in terror acts and assisting insurgents, a news agency reported on Thursday. Investigators in Diwanya issued warrants for the arrest of 50 policemen, seven of them officers, on the basis of confessions made by detained fighters, police sources were cited as saying by the Voices of Iraq news agency.
The sources said confessions by fighters who were recently arrested showed that policemen were involved in terrorist acts in the province.
The city of Diwanya, 180 kilometres south of Baghdad, has recently become a hotbed for unrest and activities by fighters loyal to the radical Shiite leader Moqtada al-Sadr. Many arrests have been made.
