PHOENIX, Aug. 3 Knights-Columbus-AZ
More than 80 bishops as well as delegates and their families from around world to attend
PHOENIX, Aug. 3 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The largest gathering of Catholic bishops in the United States, outside of the annual meetings of U.S. Bishops, will take place in Phoenix this week at the 127th Knights of Columbus Supreme Convention.
The world's largest lay Catholic organization, the Knights of Columbus, will hold its annual convention at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa this week from Aug. 4-6. There will be many opportunities for feature coverage of the event.
TUESDAY AUGUST 4th SCHEDULE
9:30 a.m. -- Opening Mass of the convention. It is an elaborate, colorful event, with at least 81 bishops from the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the Philippines concelebrating, eight of whom are Cardinals. Another hundred or so priests and deacons will also participate.
The principal celebrant will be Bishop Thomas Olmsted of Phoenix (he will also be the principal celebrant on Friday). Fourth Degree Knights in full regalia will be much in evidence.
1:00 p.m. -- Supreme Knight Carl Anderson delivers his annual report, and will be flanked on the stage by members of the Church hierarchy and members of the Knights of Columbus Board of Directors.
7:30 p.m. -- The annual "States Dinner" takes place. This is another photographer's delight (both still and video), with every K of C jurisdiction rising in turn to sing its state song, and a celebratory atmosphere that must be experienced to be appreciated. There will be brief words by Carl Anderson on the subject of the effect of Hispanic immigration on the Church in the United States, and a keynote address by the President of the U.S. Council of Catholic Bishops, Cardinal Francis George of Chicago.
