Giant garbage patch floating in Pacific

SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 19 An enormous island of trash twice the size of Texas is floating in the Pacific Ocean somewhere between San Francisco and Hawaii.
Chris Parry with the California Coastal Commission in San Francisco said the so-called Great Pacific Garbage Patch, has been growing a brisk rate since the 1950s, The San Francisco Chronicle reported Friday.
The trash stew is 80 percent plastic and weighs more than 3.5 million tons.
"At this point, cleaning it up isn't an option," Parry said. "It's just going to get bigger as our reliance on plastics continues."
Parry said using canvas bags to cart groceries instead of using plastic bags is a good first step to reducing reliance on plastics, the newspaper said. Copyright 2007 by UPI

Somewhere in the Pacific? Something the size of two Texas’s and they say somewhere? Is this writing by the say people who say Global Warming is caused by people? Anyone who has a brain and knows anything about the history of weather KNOWS it is a cycle the earth goes thru. Personally, I am more concerned with the shifting of the poles. (for those who never heard of this just look it up.)

Following a similar mecchanism to the tragedy of the commons it is illogical in constructive discussion to allocate blame. We are increasingly managing our waste but accidents will always happen.
Re-use options would begin to turn this hazard into a resource. Build pontoons/platforms and/or floats for a offshore human settlement?

People actually believe this? Does everyone who posts on this board wear tin-foil hats as well? A trash island twice the size of Texas would be simple to pinpoint, there is no explanation for the vague location "somewhere between San Francisco and Hawaii". I hope this article is a joke.

This should be cleaned up and we are all to blame, especially everyone that has ignored this problem from the begining. This should be as important as global warming because without our oceans we will not survive. We should be funding cleaning up this mess. Why should we explore Mars or is that going to be the new dumping ground

Much of the trash is a result of careless littering. Litter in the streets eventually end up down the storm drain, that sends the litter to the water. Some cities have no street cleaners either. Americans need to learn to throw trash in the proper containers, it's easy, every time you gas up. Also, the gyms trash bins are overflowing with bottles. I worry about restaurants who sell bottled beer and wine. Don't get me started on Starbucks and milk bottles!!

what do you mean its too big to clean !
dumping in the oceans should be a crime to start with. even if its a billion tons its got to be dealt with, been there since the 1950's? My guess is ignoring it doesnt work, huh?
