Frankfurt - Europe's biggest carmaker Volkswagen AG said Thursday worldwide sales surged by 8.2 per cent during the first nine months of the year to a record 4.61 million, powered ahead by booming demand in China, South America and Eastern Europe. The sharp increase helped to offset a fall in deliveries in VW domestic German market, which is still attempting to recover from the hefty increase in value-added tax that was introduced at the start of the year.
The Wolfsburg-based carmaker also has ambitions to replace Japan's Toyota Motor Corp as the world's largest auto manufacturer.
