Calif. woman a foster parent for squirrels
SAN MATEO, Calif., Oct. 17 An employee of the Peninsula Humane Society in San Mateo, Calif., has enjoyed a successful career as a foster parent for nearly 150 local squirrels.
While Mary Nacey admits that the tiny creatures can be handful at times due to their wild nature, she said she still enjoys taking care of the furry animals at the humane society, the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury-News reported Tuesday.
"They are just like little Walt Disney characters," she said of her squirrelly foster clients. "They are each so unique."
The local wildlife center typically takes in dozens of squirrels that have been rescued from adverse conditions in the area each year and Nacey never hesitates to provide the energetic animals with a temporary home.
"They are God's creatures," Nacey said. "They were put here for a purpose. They are so much like us with different personalities" -- with at least one major exception: "They don't seem to hold a grudge."
The newspaper said that after being raised by Nacey and her husband, the squirrels are returned to the center's aviary and eventually are released back into the wild.
Max the skull coming to California
ANAHEIM, Calif., Oct. 17 A crystal skull nicknamed Max that is said to help people reach a new level of consciousness is on its way to California's Learning Light Foundation.
"Max" will be at the Anaheim center beginning Friday, giving those seeking a higher plane of existence a chance to interact with a possibly vital tool for that lofty goal, The Orange County Register said Wednesday.
"I think he's here to help mankind to draw back together," Max's owner, JoAnn Parks, said. "He's here to inspire, to encourage one's spirit, to give insight."
But Max's help doesn't come free. To spend a private meditation session with Max, one has to be willing to pay between $35 and $50.
For skeptics such as Michael Shermer, executive director for the appropriately named Skeptics society, that is too much to pay to simply sit near a crystal skull.
"I think it's just a carving somebody did and
and it's taken on urban myth status," he told the Register.
Wedding chapel accused of being aggressive
LAS VEGAS, Oct. 17 A Las Vegas wedding chapel is attempting to regain its license after being accused by its competition of being overly aggressive in its marital services.
Officials at several other Las Vegas marriage locales had accused The Garden of Love of unfair business practices, including vandalism and harassment, prompting the chapel to lose its business license, Las Vegas' KLAS-TV said Wednesday.
"We had our tires slashed, our cars keyed, followed around, doing crazy stuff. They will call you and harass you and stuff like that," A Special Memory Wedding Chapel official Larry Threadgill alleged of his business competitors.
While The Garden of Love has been the target of more than two dozen complaints to date, chapel official Tory Manvilla has defended his site's aggressive policies towards marriage recruitment.
"Out of nine or 10 chapels here, we are the only one that gets shut down. Everybody is doing the same things that we are doing. It's because there are a lot of politics on this. There are a lot of wedding chapels here that have a lot of influence on the mayor," he told KLAS-TV.
Charge: Man 'dropped in' for free beer
RALEIGH, N.J., Oct. 17 Police in Raleigh, N.C., were looking for a man who came crashing through the ceiling of a convenience store, apparently while trying to score free booze.
The suspect -- described as a white male about 6 feet tall and 180 pounds -- got in through the roof of the Wilco Hess store early on the morning of Oct. 10, The Raleigh News & Observer reported Wednesday.
The police report said the man removed some ceiling tiles and reached down to where he was able to open a cooler containing beer and wine coolers. As the guy was trying to grab beverages, the ceiling gave way and he crashed to the floor.
He tried to run out the front door, but it was locked -- and when he tried to knock it down, he found it stronger than he was. He got away through a rear door, setting off the store's security alarm.
You might get a chance to see the whole act on YouTube or on cable news shows that get mileage out of "stupid human trick"-type videos. The whole thing was captured for posterity on the store's video system.
