OSAKA, Japan, Dec. 8 Japanese authorities are trying to figure out how 3,300 people could all claim a 500-square-foot lot in Osaka as their legal residence. The lot, located in a residential area of the city, has a five-story building on it that contains a day laborer support office, the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper reports. The problem of too many residents came to the attention of authorities after police arrested a man on suspicion of illegally obtaining a registration card under a false name. The man told police he wanted a new identity so he purchased a registration card on the Internet. He said an acquaintance told him to list the lot in Osaka as his address.Apparently the number of residents at the Osaka location has been increasing over the years.A spokesman says it hit 2,000 four years ago.Copyright 2006 by UPI
