Islamabad - Twenty-five people were injured Tuesday when a bomb exploded in a busy shopping area of the capital of Pakistan's North-West Frontier Province, officials said. The bomb was planted in a water cooler in the basement of a shop selling audio and video recordings in Peshawar, city police chief Abdul Majeed Marwat said.
Four of the victims were in a critical condition, according to medical officials, but no one died in the blast despite initial reports that two people were killed.
Peshawar traders selling DVDs and CDs previously received threats from pro-Taliban militants who regard such goods as "un-Islamic."
The province bordering Afghanistan has suffered from creeping intimidation by Islamic extremist groups demanding observance of strict Taliban-style law.
Barber shops have also come under attack as the shaving of beards is also considered a breach of Islamic traditions. Women teachers and girl students have also been threatened with reprisals if they do not wear burka veils.
In a separate incident in the province Tuesday, three police officers were injured when a roadside bomb stuck their vehicle in the Kohat district, located 50 kilometres south of Peshawar.
