Copenhagen - Danish police used teargas to break up a major demonstration in Copenhagen Saturday in which 436 young people were detained and a number of people injured, radio reports said. The protesters were demanding a new autonomous youth centre be made available in the capital's north-west following the demolition of a landmark "alternative scene" youth centre six months ago.
Several hundred protesters at the time had taken part in days of demonstrations in the so-called free city Christiania area.
The police eviction that preceded the demolition had also sparked violent protests in other European cities - notably Milan and Venice, where dozens of activists entered Danish consulates and briefly declared them occupied.
