BRUSSELS, Oct. 5 European Union Commissioner Franco Frattini said this week he is set to propose an increase in security measures for some airline flights into Europe.
Under Frattini's proposal, the private data of travelers boarding flights to Europe in third-world countries would be checked as a precautionary measure, the EU Observer said Friday.
But if the plan is approved, flights within Europe could possible be included in the enhanced security plan one day.
The enhanced security system is similar to that used by the United States following the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001, the EU Observer reported.
U.S. officials have collected 34 types of personal information from air passengers from Europe since the 2001 attacks, including passengers' addresses and credit card numbers.
"We have been dealing with the security of our international partners, first of all the United States. But now it is time to deal with the security of our citizens," Frattini said Thursday.
