Japanese electronics giant Sony Corp has announced that it is ready to ship the world's first OLED televisions. These televisions are based on the organic-light emitting diode technology and are super thin to boot.
"The latest OLED TV (XEL-1), which weighs two kilograms and is about 3mm thin, features a resolution of 940×540 and contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1," Sony said.
The company maintains that the new technology is better than the existing liquid crystal one and delivers high quality images. The Sony XEL-1 ultra-thin TV also reduces energy consumption by over 40 percent and can replay video some 1,000 times faster than LCD televisions.
However Sony is not going all-out with marketing the new product. It has said it expects to produce only about 2,000 units per month. Sony Executive Deputy President Katsumi Ihara explained the move by saying that the new televisions would not replace LCDs completely.
The new Sony XEL-1 OLED TV will ship from December 1 at a suggested retail price of 200,000 yen ($1,200).
