ALEISK, Russia, Sept. 28 Medical officials report that Russia's heaviest-ever newborn -- a 17.1-pound girl born in Siberia -- has serious health problems.
"The baby is under the special care of the local health department," Galina Kagirova, the region's chief pediatrician, told RIA Novosti Friday.
The baby, named Nadezhda, a Russian word meaning " hope," was born at a maternity clinic in Aleisk Sept. 17 by Caesarean delivery.
Her mother, Tatiana Khalina, 42, said she wasn't surprised at her daughter's birth weight because the first of 11 children weighed more than 11 pounds at birth, and the others "beat the records set by their brothers and sisters," RIA Novosti reported.
The Guinness Book of Records recorded the heaviest baby, weighing 29.23 pounds, was born in Illinois but died several hours after being born due to respiratory problems. The heaviest surviving baby was born in Italy, weighing 22.5 pounds when he was born in 1955. Copyright 2007 by UPI

You're dumb Jennifer. In Europe they sometimes cut the whole umbilical cord out. That baby didn't have to wait two weeks or anything. They dig it out right after birth and put antiseptic on it (hence the green stuff). You need to do your research!

I had 2 large boys and 1 average girl. The boys were 9 lb.8oz . 11 lb 12oz. ( Vaginal delivery thank you )and then my daughter weighed 8 lb. They said that she could have weighed 13 lb. I was gestational diabetic and now that 11 lb 12 oz boy is a diabetic as well as myself. All of my dads siblings were 12 + lb so that is where it came from. If you have a large baby be careful you will end up diabetic later in life if you aren't careful

What amazes me more about this child is the comments which have been made about her.She is an innocent baby. We should pray for her rather than make fun.

Not to mention, the word is UMBILICAL, not imbilical. (or maybe an imbilical cord what an imbicile has?) So perhaps Jennifer, you should do YOUR research on correct spelling of English words.

Jennifer, you're an idiot. Just because the picture was taken weeks later, doesn't mean that's when they weighed the baby. I doubt you've done your "research", you think you're clever, but you just sound ignorant.

It is impossible that this baby was born weighing 17 lbs. I am not saying that it is impossible to give birth to a baby that size what I am saying is that this baby didnt weigh 17 lbs. If you look at the picture you will see that she doesnt have an imbulical cord she has a belly button. It takes 2 weeks for the cord to fall off. She is longer by alot then a normal sized babies. So before you go ahead and believe evrything that you read, try doing your research.

Wild photo of the big baby next to the normal size one who had a look of awe/fear on her little face. That kid will be going through cases of formula per day. Glad I don't have to deal with those diapers.
