Vienna/New York - Austria's Foreign Minister Ursula Plassnik on Wednesday slammed the violent response of Myanmar's military rulers against the protests in the country. "The violent action against peaceful protesters and the arrests of representatives of the democratic movement cannot be justified and must stop immediately," Austria's Foreign Ministry quoted Plassnik in a press release. "The Myanmar leaders must understand that violence cannot solve the country's problems."
Plassnik, who is currently attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York called on Myanmar's neighbours, especially China, to exert its influence on the regime.
The people in Myanmar must be admired for their bravery in view of the "threats and repression by army and police," Plassnik added. "They deserve full international support and solidarity."
