"Resident Evil: Extinction" topped the weekend box office with earnings of $24 million, well ahead fo the $14 million made by "Good Luck Chuck."
The Resident Evil franchise is one of Capcom's popular video game series. The third film of the series has beaten the second one "Resident Evil: Apocalypse," which had grossed $23 million on debut in 2004.
Sony Screen Gems have said Extinction is the final movie in the RE series, but insiders are predicting more movies to come in the future. "It absolutely would not surprise me considering the success of the franchise that they find a way to come up with another. It's a real possibility," said Rory Bruer, Sony's head of distribution.
Jessica Alba and Dane Cook starrer Good Luck Chuck made good money despite being panned by critics. "The Brave One," which was the top grosser last weekend, slipped to No. 3 with earnings of $7.4 million, while Universal's "Sydney White" took the sixth spot with $5.3 million.
"3:10 to Yuma" was on the fourth spot with $6.3 million followed by "Eastern Promises," at $5.7 million.
"Mr Woodcock", "The Bourne Ultimatum," "Superbad" and "Dragon Wars" made up the top 10 this weekend, according to the studio estimates.
