Rome - Two Italian soldiers have gone missing in Afghanistan, Italy's Ansa news agency reported Sunday. The two soldiers, part of the 2,290-strong Italian contingent of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF), went missing Saturday evening.
A search was also underway for the Afghan driver and interpreter for the two men.
The group is believed to have passed a police checkpoint in the western province of Herat on Saturday after which they disappeared.
It was not immediately clear if the soldiers had been abducted.
A spokesman for the radical Islamic Taliban rebel movement said that they were not holding the Italians.
