Manila - Two policemen were injured when communist rebels raided their station in a southern Philippine town on Sunday and took away several firearms, a police official said. The rebels attacked the police station in Cantilan town in the southern province of Surigao del Sur around noon.
Senior Superintendent Alex Ga, provincial police chief, said only four policemen were manning the station at the time of the attack.
"But the policemen still managed to engage the rebels," he said.
The guerrillas ransacked the police station's armoury after overpowering the police officers, taking away 10 assorted firearms and radio equipment, Ga said.
Communist rebels have been fighting the Philippine government since the late 1960s, making the movement one of the longest-running leftist insurgencies in Asia.
