BEIJING, Sept. 21 A Chinese official says the government is committed to controlling energy waste and greenhouse gas emissions.

Yu Qingtai -- special representative of Ministry of Foreign Affairs for climate change negotiations -- said the government has set a goal of reducing energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product by 20 percent, and raising the proportion of renewable energy by 10 percent by 2010, Xinhua news service said Friday.

Yu said the country saved an energy equivalent of 800 million tons of coal between 1990 and 2005, equaling 1.8 billion tons of carbon dioxide.

"China will continue to try its best to tackle climate change in accordance with its responsibility for the Chinese people and all humanity," Yu told Xinhua.
