WARSAW, Poland, Sept. 20 An EU special team is to visit Poland to check whether Polish fishermen are preparing to violate a ban on cod fishing in the Baltic Sea.
Brussels' move was in response to Polish fishermen's public statements saying they will break the EU ban on cod fishing, Polish Radio reported Thursday.
If the European Commission-established ban on cod fishing is broken, Brussels may sue Poland at the European tribunal of justice, the report said.
The fishermen said they haven't taken Poland's cod fishing quota as yet and therefore they will ignore the EU ban.
The European Union said Poland has exceeded its quota and Brussels ignored Polish documents that supposedly support the Polish fishermen's claims.
The fishermen say they could go bankrupt if they interrupt cod fishing.
