BEIJING, Sept. 19 Typhoon Wipha, packing winds of more than 100 miles per hour, slammed into coastal east China's early Wednesday, threatening millions of residents.
Xinhua news agency reported the storm landed at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday local time in Cangnan County in east China's Zhejiang Province. Authorities already have evacuated more than 2 million people who were in the storm's path.
The BBC reported the storm might spare Shanghai, as it was expected to pass 60 miles southwest of the country's financial capital by Wednesday evening, but the threats of flooding, high winds and heavy rains in the city were not ruled out.
The report said although it had been downgraded to a tropical storm, Wipha still had strength to inflict major damage in the region outside the city.
